Final Deliverables

THE PROBLEM:
J. Peterman's ostomy bag frequently swells up with gas. This makes the bag bulge from underneath his clothing and increases the chance of ostomy bag detaching from his body. His current solution is to "burp" his bag by briefly decoupling it from his body to release the gas. This is best done in a private setting, such as a washroom, but this is not always accessible for him and this has become a significant inconvenience for him at his place of work.
OUR SOLUTION:
Our proposed solution, the OstoVent Bag, incorporates a charcoal filter on the exterior wall of the ostomy bag. Both sides of the filter will be covered with a gas-permeable, water-impermeable polymer known as eVent. The filter will allow gases to escape the bag without the need to manually vent it, while also providing deodorization. The eVent layer will serve to prevent clogging of the filter by the inner contents of the ostomy bag or by external sources of moisture (for example, when showering). This maximizes the length of time that a single bag can be used before it needs to be replaced. The placement of the filter (near the top of the bag) is also meant to reduce the chance of the filter clogging by decreasing exposure of the filter complex to the inner contents of the ostomy bag.
